This Privacy Policy explains how Charles DZADU, an independent developer (“I”, “me”, “my”), collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Chicken mobile application and related services (the “App”). By using the App, you agree to this Policy.

1. Who I am

The developer and data controller responsible for your information is Charles DZADU, an independent developer and the operator of the Chicken app. You can reach me at [email protected] for any privacy question or request.

2. Information I collect

Information you provide

  • Account: when you sign up with Apple, Google, or your phone number, I receive your name, email address, and/or phone number and a unique account identifier from that provider.
  • Profile: a username, and — if you opt in — a profile photo. If you don't upload a photo, a cartoon mascot avatar is used instead.
  • Your gym: the location you pin as your gym (an address/coordinates).
  • Witness details: if you choose to add a “witness,” you provide that person's name and phone number so the App can send them a one-time invitation and, if they accept, notifications when you miss a session. You must have that person's permission to share their number (see §6).
  • Squad: a squad name and the invitations you send.
  • Progress photos: if you choose to take or upload workout photos.
  • Support: information you send when you contact me for help.

Information collected automatically

  • Location data: the App accesses your device location only when you check in at your gym or when an alarm is active, and solely to verify that you are at your pinned gym. I do not access your location at any other time, and I do not track your location in the background or use it for advertising.
  • Activity data: your schedule, check-ins, missed sessions (“chickens”), streaks, points, badges, and squad/league activity.
  • Device & technical data: device model, operating system, app version, language, time zone, a device/installation identifier, and push notification tokens.
  • Usage & analytics data: in-app events and interactions, collected through PostHog (see §7).

Information from third parties

  • App stores: Apple and Google confirm your subscription status. I do not receive or store your full payment card details — payments are handled by the app stores.

3. How I use your information

Your information is used to:

  • create and manage your account and profile;
  • provide the core service — schedule alarms, verify gym check-ins by location, and run streaks, points, badges, squads, and leagues;
  • let you share a witness link and, if the witness accepts, send them miss notifications (via web push);
  • send push notifications you've enabled;
  • operate public leaderboards and profiles if you opt in (see §5);
  • process subscriptions and trials;
  • analyze usage to improve the App;
  • provide support, ensure security, prevent fraud and abuse, and moderate content;
  • comply with legal obligations.

Legal bases (GDPR/UK GDPR). Where these laws apply, I rely on: performance of a contract (providing the App you signed up for); consent (location access, push notifications, adding a witness, opting into public leaderboards — you can withdraw consent at any time); legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention, product improvement); and legal obligation.

4. Push notifications

  • Push notifications are delivered via Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google). You can turn them off in your device settings.
  • Witness alerts are also web push (Firebase). A witness opens the link you share, installs the lightweight web page, grants notification permission, and accepts before any alert is ever sent; they can opt out at any time. No phone number is collected or used.

5. Public leaderboards and profiles

Global leaderboards are opt-in and gated behind a qualifying streak. If you opt in, your username, avatar or photo, streak, points, rank, show-up percentage, and earned badges become visible to other users. I do not publicly display your real name, email, phone number, location, gym, or witness/squad details. You can opt out at any time, which removes you from public boards. The App provides a report function, reported content is moderated, and photos are screened for prohibited content on upload.

6. The witness feature (third-party data)

When you add a witness, you share a private link with someone. The App does not collect their name or phone number — you send the link yourself through your own channel. If they open it and accept, their device provides a web-push token used only to deliver miss notifications tied to your account, plus a weekly recap. A witness may decline, or opt out later, after which they are no longer notified and their push token is deleted in line with §9. Any optional label you give a witness is stored for your own reference only. If you are a witness and want your data removed, contact [email protected].

7. Service providers and hosting

I do not sell your personal information. It is shared only with vendors who process it on my behalf under contract:

ProviderPurposeData involved
Google FirebaseAuthentication, database, file storage, push notifications (including witness web push), crash reportingaccount, profile, activity, photos, device & witness push tokens
PostHog (EU Cloud)Product analyticsusage events, device/technical data
Backend API & hostingRunning the app's server and databasedata processed by the app's servers
Apple App Store / Google PlaySign-in, subscriptions & paymentsaccount identifier, purchase status

Your data is hosted in the European Union. I may also disclose information to comply with law, enforce the Terms, or protect rights and safety. If the business is ever involved in a merger or acquisition, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

8. International data transfers

Your information is stored and processed in the European Union. Some sub-processors (such as Apple and Google) may process limited data in other countries; where that happens, appropriate safeguards apply, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

9. Data retention

Your information is kept for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the App. When you delete your account, your personal data is deleted or de-identified within 30 days, except where records must be retained for legal, security, or accounting reasons. A witness's push token is retained only while the witness relationship is active. Aggregated or de-identified data may be kept longer.

10. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict processing of your personal data, to object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent. You can edit your profile and delete your account in the App (Profile → Delete account). To exercise other rights, contact [email protected]; I will respond within the time required by law. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

California residents (CCPA/CPRA): you have the right to know, delete, correct, and opt out of the “sharing”/“sale” of personal information. I do not sell your personal information. To exercise these rights, contact [email protected].

11. Security

I use technical and organizational measures — including encryption in transit, access controls, and reputable EU-based infrastructure providers — to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and absolute security cannot be guaranteed.

12. Age requirement

The App is intended for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to use it. I do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has provided data, contact [email protected] and it will be deleted.

13. Changes to this Policy

This Policy may be updated from time to time. The updated version will be posted with a new “Last updated” date and, for material changes, you will be notified in the App or by email.
